In the 1930s, Mexican artist Frida Kahlo opened her home to Leon Trotsky, a leading Marxist revolutionary who had been expelled from the Soviet Union. Trotsky and his wife Natalia found sanctuary in Kahlo's house in Coyoacán, Mexico City, where they lived for several years. Kahlo and Trotsky struck up a close friendship, and Kahlo even painted a portrait of Trotsky, which became one of her most famous works.
But Trotsky's stay in Mexico was far from peaceful. He was targeted by Soviet agents who sought to eliminate him, and Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera went to great lengths to protect him. Despite the danger, Kahlo continued to support Trotsky and his revolutionary ideas until his assassination in 1940.
This video explores the fascinating story of Kahlo and Trotsky's friendship and their time together in Mexico. It examines the political context of their relationship, Kahlo's own activism, and the legacy of Trotsky's presence in Mexico, which still resonates today. Through rare footage, photographs, and interviews with experts, this video brings to life one of the most intriguing and important chapters in Kahlo's life and the history of Mexico.
