Porsche announced, citing Herrmann's family, that racing icon Hans Herrmann has passed away at the age of 97. He was a pioneer of motorsport in Germany, drove in Formula 1 and triumphed at Le Mans. Between 1953 and 1968, he competed in 18 Formula 1 races for Mercedes and Porsche, as well as for Maserati, Cooper and BRM. However, his greatest success was surviving his career. He was active in various types of racing in international motorsport for many years. He celebrated his greatest success in 1970 with overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In this classic race, he shared the red-white-red Porsche 917 with Englishman Richard Attwood. After that, Herrmann ended his career. ‘I didn't want to tempt fate any longer,’ the racing driver once said. ‘I was aware of how lucky I had been, while so many friends had lost their lives over the years.’ Hans Herrmann was also known as ‘Hans in Luck.’ That's because he had retained the most important thing a racing driver could retain in the 1950s and 1960s: his life.
