** UPDATE **
I would cut the post and the column to be 6 inches longer if you have feeders that hang, just to be safe. I've had one squirrel that was able to run up to the column jump as high as it could onto it then jump up to a hanging feeder which he then used to climb up. Other than that one squirrel, I haven't had any issues and it's saved me a bunch of money in bird seed!
