OICCI spoke to The World Bank Chief Economist of South Asia Region (SAR) Franziska Ohnsorge, during her visit to the Chamber, on growth perspectives of SAR and what Pakistan’s private sector should focus on.

Ohnsorge mentioned that Pakistan was not alone in its weakness in private investment growth. “Across the region the latest data for private sector investment growth is less than it was before the pandemic, but the difference is in the public sector investment. In Bangladesh and India, there is an increase in public sector investment but not so much in Pakistan.”

On focus areas, the WB chief economist said that the private sector can focus on energy transition as it would have many benefits. “For the individual firms, there are productivity gains and for the country as a whole there would be the benefit of lesser energy imports, leading to fewer balance of payment pressures, lesser pollution and job creation.”
