The “soft” approach—represented in the department's name change to the Department of Defense in 1949—was defined by failed coalition building, democracy projects, endless nation building. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan were costly lessons in trying to be the world’s social worker.
The Department of War renaming serves as a cultural reset and reminder that the department exists to defend America decisively, not to coddle enemies.
