Join me on a challenging adventure to the summit of Maungatautari, New Zealand’s largest predator-free sanctuary! 🏔️ This epic 13.5km hike took me 4.5 hours return, with a leg-burning 648 meters of elevation gain.

The journey begins on wide open trails, before narrowing into steeper, overgrown paths that test both endurance and determination. Just when you think you’ve reached the summit, a steep rocky outcrop appears — usually offering stunning views on a clear day. On this hike, I found myself completely in the clouds, with mystery instead of vistas! After descending the rocky ridge, the track pushes on another 45 minutes to the true summit — a wild, overgrown peak where views are limited, unless you bring a 360 camera and pole to rise above the canopy.

Despite the weather, this hike was all about the challenge, the atmosphere of the mist, and the reward of reaching the top inside this incredible sanctuary. 🌿
