This talk from the Interface Seminar Series explores the neurocognitive processes underlying pausing in second language (L2) speaking and writing. Professors Andrea Révész (University College London) and Hyeonjeong Jeong (Tohoku University) present their cutting-edge research that combines behavioral measures—such as speech analysis, eye-tracking, and stimulated recall—with neuroimaging (fMRI) to investigate how pauses function across different modes of language production. Their findings show how behavioral and neural data converge and diverge, offering a richer account of L2 production processes. The session concludes with implications for models of speech and writing in second language research.
