Tony Skinn has George Mason playing really good basketball at the top of the A-10 standings. Here’s a breakdown of their ball screen refusal into hammer screen play.
The setup:
PG brings it up, hits big popping to left slot
Swings to wing, sets up for ball screen going to the middle
The action:
Play requires a refusal and baseline drive
Corner man lifts to set hammer screen (flare for wing player)
Wing cuts down to corner to receive kickout across baseline
Knocks down the corner three
Secondary option:
Original ball screener turns back to screen for PG on the left side (throwback pass for three)
They never got to that look
Why it worked:
The baseline drive drew in help from the corner man’s defender. When he lifted to hammer screen for the shooter sliding down to the corner, it created a wide-open three for the Patriots.
George Mason could be a real solid upset contender come March.
