Watch Vintage Axe Works restore a True Temper Kelly Works Flint Edge Jersey single bit axe for a customer.
The head was provided by the customer and needed extensive repairs. The eye had been smashed down and in, and required a lot of persuasion and hand filing to get to back to a normal shape. After the eye was repaired, the head was hung on a 36" ash blank using an 8" drawknife.
Once the head was hung, the handle was profiled and contoured on a grinder and sanding equipment. The head was then finished with a black forced patina, and a razor-sharp cutting edge was ground in.
The axe head is secured to the handle with a walnut wedge, and was submerged in boiled linseed oil for several hours.
