Описание: India's Southwest Monsoon has lost momentum after an encouraging onset over Kerala on June 4, resulting in a sharp rainfall deficit across the country. According to the India Meteorological Department, India received only 42.6 mm of rainfall between June 4 and June 18 against the normal 72.2 mm, leaving the country with a 41% rainfall deficit.

Weather experts attribute the slowdown to a combination of factors, including weak low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, the influence of Western Disturbances, limited support from the Madden-Julian Oscillation, and the emergence of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean. Historically, El Niño has been linked to weaker monsoon activity and below-normal rainfall in India.

Experts caution that while El Niño alone cannot stop the monsoon, it can create conditions that are less favourable for widespread rainfall. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the monsoon regains strength and narrows the growing rainfall deficit, a key concern for agriculture, water resources, and the broader economy.
