The 2023 Luzerner Fasnacht (February 16 – 21, 2023) was a record-breaking year, seeing the highest attendance in the event's history at that time due to exceptionally mild, spring-like weather.
2023 Highlights & Records
Total Attendance: Approximately 314,000 people celebrated in the city over the five days, an increase of 100,000 compared to 2022.
Schmutziger Donnerstag (Feb 16): A record 25,000 spectators attended the 5:00 a.m. Urknall (Big Bang) at Kapellplatz. The afternoon Fritschi-Umzug (parade) drew 45,000 people.
Güdismontag (Feb 20): The Wey-Umzug set an all-time record with 60,000 spectators lining the streets.
Monstercorso (Feb 21): The grand finale attracted 30,000 fans to watch the massed Guggenmusik bands.
The Plakette (Pin): The 2023 carnival pin was designed by Frank Schmohl, the first time a German artist had been selected for the design.
Creative Themes (Sujets)
Social Satire: Floats and groups mocked contemporary issues, including "climate stickers" (Klimakleber) and the energy crisis.
Local Legends: The Wey-Zunft parade featured their traditional frog mascot, alongside creative floats depicting gold miners, a Wild West saloon, and even the Matterhorn.
Masks (Grende): Notable designs included the Burggeister as sea monsters clearing plastic waste and the Bärg-Wörze led by a drum major in a massive crow mask.
