“Caister men never turn back!” is the motto of Caister Lifeboat, but it was actually never said. Following the tragedy in 1901 when nine crew from the lifeboat were drowned, the coroner suggested to the ex-coxswain, James (Jimmy) Haylett that his crew had abandoned their search for a ship in distress. His reply was, “No sir, that’s against the rules”, but journalists changed this to the now famous phrase. A memorial to lost crew members stands in the old part of the burial ground opposite the church in the village.
This song was composed by Ken Saul, Jimmy’s great-great grandson, and was recorded as part of Stone Angels’ ‘Lonely Waters’ 2004 CD.
