Slovak landscape is primarily known for its mountainous nature with the Carpathian Mountains extending across most of the northern half of the country. Slovakia's total nominal GDP is around US$118 billion. The country is protected by Slovak Armed Forces. The president is formally the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. In March 2004, Slovakia joined NATO. Slovak Armed Forces, consists of Slovak Ground Forces and Slovak Air Force. The Defence budget is around US$2 billion which is 1.75% of the GDP. The Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Israel, Japan, Poland and United States is the major weapon supplier. The Slovak Armed Forces have a strength of just over 13,000 military personnel, which is 0.2% of the total population. VZ-58 assault rifle is the standard issue rifle in the Slovak military. The country has been an active participant in the US- and NATO-led military actions and involved in many United Nations peacekeeping missions. Slovak Armed Forces have one special force unit; the 5th Special Operation Regiment. 5th Special Operation Regiment serves as the Slovak Armed Force's primary counter-terrorism, and special operation unit.
