Normally at this time of year I would be working with two seasoned falcons but through circumstances I happened to come into possession of a fine little eyes Peales peregrine tiercel given to me by a good falconer friend who was struggling to find optimal slips for him. As a result this bird is at the development stage of a September bird and much of the skills and experience he should have, are absent, but he comes at a time when the prey and conditions are not conducive to helping an inexperienced falcon succeed. It's a perfect match of predator to prey but by mid winter the partridge are smart, fit and "street-smart" prey and offer little by way of mistakes or vulnerability. It's been a balance of providing high win percentage set ups for this bird without losing his confidence. Do I quit now and start next September when prey is weak, naive and inexperienced or do i press on. I choose the latter as i think the key is that he is being served and this is motivation enough, but a few more kills under his belt will certainly seal those good habits and his overall confidence.
On the flip side I have Wesson, the surviving brother of my formidable two male gyr peales hybrids "Smith & Wesson". He is a seasoned falcon now 3/4 the way through his 3rd season. He's the master of his domain and has a good handle on partridge and it shows in his performance and high percentage success rate. Today was a contrast of the Novice and the Pro. Each great flights their own way. I hope you enjoy watching this video as I did experiencing it. The weather for mid January was incredible and I will gladly take this welcome break from frigid sub zero temperatures ... as indeed the tiercel Peales does.
