The Project:
Around 2010, Apple was building a massive $1 billion data center (specifically for iCloud and iTunes traffic) in Maiden, North Carolina.
The Problem:
To complete the facility, Apple needed to acquire several surrounding plots of land. They managed to buy most of them easily, but the Fulbrights' 1-acre property sat right in the middle of the planned development.
The Property:
The couple had lived there for 34 years in a modest, single-story house. They had purchased the land for only $6,000 originally. By 2010, the tax assessed value was around $181,700.
The Negotiation
Apple made several offers, all of which the Fulbrights rejected. They weren't trying to be greedy; they simply didn't want to leave the home they had built their lives in.
Eventually, Apple became desperate. They asked the Fulbrights to essentially "name their price."
Kathy Fulbright told the Apple representatives a number she thought would end the conversation: $1.7 million. To her surprise, Apple agreed immediately.
The Aftermath
The deal was life-changing for the couple:
They used the money to upgrade from their 1-acre lot to a 49-acre property.
They built a 4,200-square-foot custom home.
The new property included luxury amenities like a Jacuzzi and a man-made pond stocked with bass and catfish.
