FoamRite, LLC was contacted by Wirtz Manufacturing to spray foam throughout this huge industrial building; a steel fabricating facility that was being converted to a manufacturing facility.
Insulating metal walls is now a critical aspect of industrial building construction. However, many industrial buildings were built before industrial insulation was a main priority. Consequently, while a huge undertaking, insulating industrial buildings is one of the fundamental steps required when converting them.
In this case, spraying foam in this building meant spraying a "Closed Cell" foam on corrugated metal walls that are 20' high by 650' long.
The process leads to a two-fold result: insulating the walls and preventing air infiltration. While commonly attributed to the home, air infiltration is prevalent in industrial buildings as well and must be addressed as an independent issue when insulating the walls in any type of structure. This is certainly the case when insulating metal walls because metal building commercial insulation is engineered differently than home insulation to meet the unique thermal and acoustical requirements of these kinds of structures.
For the Wirtz Mfg. building, stopping air infiltration is ensured through FoamRite's application of "Closed Cell" spray foam. A variation of the standard spray foams utilized in this industry, "Closed Cell" spray foam refers to material that is comprised mostly of individual non-interconnecting cellular voids.
In simple terms, "closed cell" refers to the tiny foam cells which are packed tightly together, becoming completely closed. This foam rises and expands and becomes a better insulator due to the gas which fills each of these tiny cells.
The general standard potential benefits of insulation are commonly known --reduction in the release of carbon dioxide, reduction of heat transfer through the roof and side walls, reduction in noise from room to room. However, in addition to the basic benefits, FoamRite's "Closed Cell" spray foam also seals the building envelope, prevents air infiltration and increases R-values approximately two times that of traditional insulation.
And of course, there are a variety of insulation related incentives and rebate programs offered by Federal and State governments and utility companies to building owners and companies who install energy efficient products and technologies, among them, stopping air infiltration with high quality, industrial insulation.
