Prime Shaquille O’Neal showcase against a Knicks squad that would eventually finish with 50 wins, good for 3rd in the East. This was Shaq’s 3rd highest scoring game of his absurdly dominant 1999-00 MVP season; a campaign in which he averaged 29.7p, 13.6r, 3.8a and 3.0b in 40.0 mpg. He led the NBA in field goal percentage while grabbing his 2nd scoring title.

People are often ignorant of Shaq’s high skill level and pure basketball artistry. One doesn’t score over 28,000 career points by just being “bigger” than the competition. It’s rare to find “highlight” tapes for physically superior bigs that include anything but dunks and blocks. This influences how fans perceive players. In 2017 Kevin Durant was quoted saying “Shaq couldn’t shoot outside the paint, he didn’t have any skills because he was bigger and stronger than everybody.” While everything after “he was” is true, its far from the entire truth.

Jump-hooks, running hooks, turnaround jumpers, baseline spins, shimmies, up and unders, drop-steps, etc... Shaquille O’Neal possessed and utilized just as much skill (if not more) than isolated raw physical talent. His back to the basket arsenal was loaded. He had the ability to read the defense, his own defender, and react accordingly. In this Lakers/Knicks 2000 game alone, he works the post with jump-hooks middle, baseline turnarounds, spin baseline-spin back middle, even threw in a mini dream shake at 5:22. The physical part made him tough to guard, the skill level made him impossible to stop.
