Kargah Buddha is 9 km from the main city of Gilgit.
It was discovered somewhere between 1938-1939 along with some other Buddhist remains in the region.
It is at a height of 50 feet overlooking the beautiful towns of Barmas ,Khur, Napura and Baseen.
The Kargah Buddha is locally known as Yashani, it is a carving of the Buddha with his right hand raised upwards this indicates the the posture of Abhaya.
Legend speaks that the carved figure is actually of a man-eating Ogress who terrorised and harmed the residents of the area.
She was later pinned into the mountain by the local priest to protect the community from her evil deeds.
Some archaeologists believe it was completed in the 7th century. At that time Gilgit was under the rule of China. From the 3rd to the 11th century Buddhism was the main religion here.
Every year thousands of Buddhists from Korea, Japan and other countries visit the Buddhist site for a viewing of the statue of Yatchini.
It is an amazing place to visit with family and friends as you can not learn more about the history behind the Kargah Buddha but you can also enjoy the icy cold water flowing down at the site as well as the chilling wind.
The entry fee for local visitor is Rs50 for elders and Rs20 for children. Nationals have to pay Rs100 while foreign tourists pay Rs500 to visit the site.
