For weeks, winter fog protected the German offensive during the Battle of the Bulge. But when the skies cleared in late December 1944, everything changed.
American P-47 Thunderbolts — known to German troops as Jabos — filled the skies. Armed with eight .50-caliber machine guns and heavy rockets, they hunted anything that moved. Trucks, tanks, fuel columns — all were destroyed in daylight. Entire panzer divisions were pinned in place, unable to move without being annihilated from above.
German commanders later admitted they had no defense against the Jabos. Once the weather cleared, the Battle of the Bulge was no longer decided on the ground — the sky decided it.
