Kellogg Emeritus Fellow David Grylls talks to Dorian Lynskey about his latest book The Ministry of Truth: A Biography of George Orwell’s 1984
Longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction 2019 and the Orwell Prize for Political Writing 2020, this remarkable and original book investigates the influences that came together in the writing of 1984 from Orwell's experiences in the Spanish Civil War and war-time London to his book's roots in utopian and dystopian fiction. He explores the phenomenon that the novel became on publication and the changing ways in which it has been read over the decades since.
The Ministry of Truth is a fascinating examination of one of the most significant works of modern English literature. It describes how history can inform fiction and how fiction can influence history.
Speaker: Dorian Lynskey writes about politics and culture for various publications. He is the author of 33 Revolutions Per Minute: A History of Protest Songs and The Ministry of Truth: A Biography of George Orwell’s 1984. He also hosts the Oh God What Now? podcast.
Chair: David Grylls, a founding Fellow of the College, was formerly University Lecturer in Literature in Oxford University Department for Continuing Education and Director of Studies of the Department’s literature and creative writing programmes. He is currently a Departmental tutor and book reviewer for the Sunday Times.
