Ruston and Hornsby tandem locomotives 165DE 0-4-0s 421439 and 423658, were both offered for tender as part of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society’s reorganisation of unused exhibits, but no group seemed much interested on taking on the pair. However Jordan Thompson owner of the Thompson Loco Collection stepped in to save the unique tandem locomotives with help from Andrew Briddon The locomotives were built in 1958 for the former Colvilles Limited’s Clyde Ironworks in Glasgow. The tandem system allowed the locomotives to be controlled by one driver giving a 4 axle 330hp locomotive which could also be used as 2 separate 165hp locomotives for use on lighter duties. This gave them great flexibility for use in the ironworks with its varied duties.

Thankfully now saved by Jordan Thompson these last surviving Ruston and Hornsby tandem locomotives 165DE 0-4-0s 421439 and 423658, will now join the Thompson Locomotive Collection Peak Rail, Darley Dale, Derbyshire It will be a long project as unfortunately 423658 (No.3) has a cracked engine block but a spare was thrown in so it's a case of build up a fresh engine from the 2. 421439 (No.1) will hopefully be more straightforward as she was in use before her engine was stripped to fit new bearing shells which was never completed but should hopefully be in a better position to get running soon. And they will both have the Tandem system reinstated and updated to feature train Air and Vacuum brakes. Its Jordan Thompsons Intentions to restore the pair of locomotives back to full working order and I sincerely wish him all the very best for his future endeavors. This will proceed alongside existing fleet locomotive, Yorkshire Engine Company 2679 of 1961, Ford No.3 “Jack”.Thompson Loco Collection.
