Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) is a psychological condition that can develop in individuals who experience prolonged and severe domestic violence, most often in intimate partner relationships. The concept was introduced by psychologist Lenore E. Walker in the late 1970s to explain the mental and emotional impact of repeated abuse.
BWS is commonly understood through Walker’s Cycle of Violence:
Tension-Building Phase Stress and conflict start to rise. The victim often tries to calm the abuser to prevent violence.
Acute Battering Incident The tension erupts into physical, emotional, or sexual abuse.
Honeymoon Phase The abuser apologizes, promises change, and may act loving, making the victim believe things will improve.
Over time, this cycle creates learned helplessness, where the victim feels trapped and powerless to leave. Many also develop symptoms similar to PTSD, such as anxiety, depression, hypervigilance, and low self-esteem.
BWS is important to understand because it explains why many victims stay in abusive relationships and why some may use extreme measures, such as self-defense, to protect themselves. It is also recognized in legal cases to provide context for the victim’s actions. #psychology #viralshort #quotes #explore #reels #dostoyevski #viral #changeyourmindsetchangeyourlife #philosophy #psycholgyfacts
