Human Physiology - The Nervous System - Integration and Control

Описание: This video is from Chapter 11 of a one semester Human Physiology course I taught. I created these review videos to help my students by having a second chance to hear me explain the in-class materials. The course was based on Human Biology Concepts and Current Issues’, 8th Edition, by M.D. Johnson.

The chapter introduces the key properties of the nervous system and focuses on the autonomic (sympathetic and parasympathetic) component of the motor output from the central nervous system. I explore how this involuntary system works and get into how the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) components work together to promote homeostasis. With this I go over the fundamental components of neurons as well as the different types of neurons (sensor, motor and interneurons), and study the resting membrane potential and the action potential in detail. With this I also go over graded potentials and the process of summation (temporal and spacial). I also introduce glial cells, but focus on myelin producing Schwann cells and oligodendrocytes as I explain how myelin supports saltatory conduction. I go over the basics of chemical synaptic transmission and the release of neurotransmitters. There is an introduction to converging and diverging circuits and an introduction to the parts of a nerve (layers) and spinal reflexes. I also go over the basic protections of the central nervous system including the meninges, the blood brain barrier. I end by briefly going over the anatomy of the brain regions, while introducing the roles of each. I hope this helps with your studies!
