This came from just showing my little drone (DJI Mini 4 Pro) to my bigger brother the other weekend. Decided to quickly capture the Tower at St Thomas in Hockley Heath as… it was in front of us so why not!!
I also wanted to test a capture done with only video rather than timelapse photo mode. Video gives you great overlap and shooting at 60fps the extracted frames are typically quite sharp. Results were ok, but as expected has some issues. Think this is typically well documented elsewhere really, but in a pinch video can be useful. Photos give the added benefit of being GPS tagged with the drone – gives the photogram Alignment a helping start!
Anyway, fly up and down each face and corner under a setting sun (not helpful!), processed the videos in Epic RealityCapture - and then used the extracted stills it creates in Postshot to create a Gaussian Splat model too. Love the environment context GS produces! It’s a bit rough and ready, so apologies for that, but this was just a quick experiment.
Results and some numbers in the video, might be helpful for general info. The Mesh (and PC from the mesh) rendered in Nubigon. The Clay Mode is great for spotting defects in the structures surface (or in your models!!). You can spot some missing tiles at the end of the video that are difficult to spot in the Textured mesh.
If you want to tinker with the low poly model it’s on sketchfab: https://skfb.ly/pvNnC
