What the pairs of thematic dualities might mean is open to discovery. These classes explore them through movement principles and topics such as breath, vision, hearing, inner connectivity and kinesphere. This class series is not intended to be a definitive guide. Instead, each hour-long class provide a doorway for playful exploration to embody the concepts and deepen your understanding of movement principles. You will need some experience of the 11 Bartenieff Fundamental principles to do these classes. You will need enough space to move about and lie on the floor.
Some experience of taking movement classes would be useful. Classes are suitable for age 18+. People take my classes for different reasons including performance training (dance, theatre, music etc), rehabilitation, personal growth and discovery, developing tools for improvisation, getting to know their body/movement, as well as learning more about the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System of analysis.
Some material is more specifically guided by me, and you will need to be able to see your screen. The instructions are deliberately open to interpretation, so that you may explore them in your own way, and especially make the translations and adaptations relative to your body’s needs.
This is a floor-based class where you will move between lying, sitting, standing and if you have the space, some travelling. The material is for you to explore through, relative to the space you have around you. Lying and rolling a lot might not be possible for you, so explore the same ideas seated on the floor, on a chair/wheelchair, physio ball, or standing.
You might want a blanket/yoga mat/cushions/yoga blocks to make yourself more comfortable/warm. Carpet or wooden floors are fine. Sometimes it will be easier to wear socks for more slide, sometimes bare feet will be better for more grip and push. Somatic movement education is often slow to start with, so wear warm clothes if needed and be as comfortable as you can.
Somatic movement education and repatterning is an exploratory, integrative process in which you bring conscious awareness and attention to movement habits. Have a journal handy to scribble notes/draw afterwards to reflect upon your experience afterwards.
