UPDATE: The mystery instrument is called a Transceleste! Kudos to Abby at @LAPercRentals for her help identifying it! Here is a clip of the instrument being played (probably the very same one used in the Columbo sessions):
• Transceleste - a microtonal mallet instrument
The session was performed by Emil Richards, a master percussionist and inventor who performed on thousands and thousands of films and TV productions and is widely credited with introducing hundreds of novel percussion sounds to Hollywood over the course of his long career. Abby tells me Emil also invented this instrument and that he named it after his wife, Celeste. The instrument uses the Shruti scale.
ORIGINAL POST: I'm trying to identify the instrument heard after each of the first two gongs. It's kind of a chromatically ascending glass bell sound that was featured in many Universal TV scores and TV Movie scores composed by Dick DeBenedictis and his contemporary, Billy Goldenberg. You can hear this instrument featured in many scores, including Steve Spielberg's "Duel". Any ideas what this instrument is?
