Soap Creek Road is a scenic drive thru the Curecanti National Recreation Area just north of the Blue Mesa Reservoir dam. Several times on the drive to the campground we found ourselves asking why we have never turned off onto Gunnison Co Rd 721 and explored the area.
Soap Creek Campground is located in the Gunnison National Forest near several trails that lead into the West Elk Wilderness Area which is just north of the campground. The Coal Mesa Trailhead is located at the entrance to Soap Creek Campground. Horse Corrals and dispersed camping are adjacent to the campground. Nearby Ponderosa Campground has access to Blue Mesa Reservoir and also has a horse corral in the center of the upper camping loop.
