If I could go back to when I first sat at the pottery wheel… I’d have a few things to say to myself — the things that would’ve made learning pottery so much easier.
1. Make sure you have all your tools in one place before you start. You don't want to start looking for things with your clay hands.
2. Start with soft clay. Soft clay allows you to understand better how it moves and play with clay first. You will have more chances to get something out of clay rather than struggle with it.
3. Slow down. I've been told to spin the wheel at it's fastest. Personally, I think it will work much better if you slow down.
These aren’t technical tricks; they’re small mindset shifts that make the process more enjoyable and less frustrating. Because pottery isn’t just about skill — it’s about patience, rhythm, and learning to let go when things collapse.
💬 If you could give one piece of advice to your beginner self — in clay, art, or anything — what would it be?
