*WATER COOLING SYSTEM*
*Function*
Is to maintain the engine working temperature.
*Principle*
Works on the principle of **heat transfer**.
Engine → Coolant → disposes heat to atmosphere.
---
*Construction*
i) *Engine coolant galleries* → Hose pipe → *Thermostat valve*
ii) *Thermostat valve (Main line)* → Hose pipe → *Radiator (Upper tank)*
iii) *Radiator (Lower tank)* → Hose pipe → *Water pump*
iv) *Water pump* → Hose pipe → *Engine coolant galleries*
v) *Bypass line* from radiator to engine
vi) *Radiator pressure cap* → *Reservoir tank*
---
*Working*
i) When engine is cranked, it should reach its operating temperature.
(Engine starts to warm up)
ii) Due to this, the thermostat valve remains closed and recirculates the coolant back to the engine.
iii) As the engine warms up and reaches its working temperature, the volatile liquid inside the bellows expands due to which the valve opens and closes the bypass line and opens the main line to the radiator.
iv) The radiator consists of tubes and fins.
v) As the hot coolant moves from the upper tank of the radiator through these tubes, it comes in contact with the air passing through the fins.
vi) Due to which the coolant temperature gets reduced till it reaches the radiator lower tank.
vii) After which the coolant reaches the water pump from where the coolant is sent back to the engine.
viii) Due to continuous working of engine, both its temperature and pressure inside the system increase, which can damage the system.
ix) *Pressure cap* → *Spring loaded valve* → *Reservoir*
Here the Radiator Pressure cap comes to help, it has a mechanism in which when the temp and pressure of the coolant inside the system increases, the spring loaded valve inside the pressed cap opens and sends that coolant under pressure and temp goes to the Reservoir tank.
As the system comes back to normal operating temperature, the same coolant in the reservoir comes back to the radiator to maintain the level of coolant in the system.
This is how the water cooling system works.
