Well a few thing obviously, you start to live more frugally, you live below your means, you have a high savings rate, a high investing rate, and an incredibly low burn rate. These are all the obvious things that happen - the things that you expect. (Some of your friends will even probably accuse you of becoming one of those people featured on extreme cheapskates 🤣)

But something unexpected happens when you reach for financial independence at a young age, when you FIRE so to speak.

You often become a minimalist. That is exactly what happened to be and so many FI-ers. And now certainly not EVERY member of the FIRE community becomes a minimalist, but more often than not, those that start their journey to financial independence tend to take steps towards becoming a minimalist even if they don’t go there all the way.

And with every thing in life, minimalism exists on a spectrum. Some people have 10 personal items and a single light bulb 💡 that they carry from room to room (I exaggerate but you get the idea) and other minimalist live what appears to be more of an ordinary lifestyle, but they rather shun excess in their life and their home. Like I said, it all exists on a spectrum, and there is no rulebook on minimalism, just like there is no rulebook on financial independence.

We all sort of make it up as we go and find what works best for us.

Personally love being apart of the FIRE community, and I love living a life of minimalism. It allows me to spend consciously and focus more on spending on experiences rather than filling my life with stuff. I would rather load my life with memories rather than a shelf full of trinkets collecting dust - because I rather hate dusting anyhow. Am I right, or am I right?

I encourage absolutely everyone to at least try out the journey to FIRE - because truly thing that the lessons it teaches you about what is important in life and how to appropriately value your hard earned money are absolutely invaluable.
