Minister of Finance of India and politician P. Chidambaram speaks on economic policies. He says,"Much of it was anticipated and spelled out in the manifesto. There was a manifesto committee under Mr. Shivraj Patil and I was pretty sure that I would be excluded from the committee but that's me. They produced a document so one day Jeevji called me and said this is the manifesto. I don't know it doesn't sound good to me you read it. He said to sit in that corner of that waiting room outside and read it. I sat on a chair and started reading the manifesto I think. I must have spent an hour, hour and a half. It was a disastrous document, one of those platitudinous, vague and ambivalent document which Congress party produces from time to time and about two hours later, three hours later close to one 'o clock he called and said have you read it, I said yes, he said what you make out of it I said its disastrous, so what do we do because elections will call and we have to announce the manifesto so he said to start working on it, I said listen we can work on it no difficulty but it would bear no resemblance to what your community has done."
Palaniappan Chidambaram is an Indian politician and attorney who currently serves as Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha and formerly served as the Union Minister of Finance of India. Chidambaram is a corporate lawyer and an important member of the last Congress-led government. He has been the Finance Minister since May 2004, except for a three and a half year stint – beginning November 2008 – as Home Minister, in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Chidambaram returned as Finance Minister in July 2012, succeeding Pranab Mukherjee, who demitted office to become the President of India.
He was called by Indian Prime Minister Modi as "recounting minister" on various occasions while Modi addressing election campaigns. In the budget for 1996–97, Chidamba discipline in government spending and launched an ambitious tax reform program to tackle an unwieldy fiscal deficit.
