Dubai sends off rehabilitated sea turtles into the United Arab Emirates Arabian Gulf sea

Описание: Slowly but surely, rehabilitated sea turtles crawled back into the United Arab Emirates Arabian Gulf sea on Friday (June 16) during an event marking World Sea Turtle Day.

To raise awareness about their risk of extinction, 15 Hawksbill and six Green turtles - juveniles and adults, were set free by Dubai's Turtle Rehabilitation Project after being rescued and rehabilitated.

"The fact that they can take them - get them rehabilitated and set them back free into their natural environment, which I think is lovely," English tourist in Dubai, Joe Hurst said.

Washed up on the shore, these turtles were among thousands of others found by the rehabilitation center and placed at an aquarium facility, where they receive medical care.

However, these creatures are set to face many challenges at sea, such as pollution, coastal developments, and human threats - which is why many of them were fitted with satellite transmitters that allow the rescue center to track their journey.

"When turtle comes out to breath, we can get the signal sent to satellite and we get a geographical location, we can check the water temperature and if the female goes out the water to the beach to nest, we can also track how long and the location, the animal has spent out of the water," said Director of the Dubai Rehabilitation Project, Barbara Lang-Lenton.

With beaches getting warmer due to climate change, the gender of sea turtles is shifting towards a higher number of females being born, Lang-Lenton told Reuters.

"Also because of ocean acidification, the ecosystem that sea turtles depend are being affected. The importance of sea turtles goes beyond them being charismatic creatures, but also they play an important role on keeping the ecosystem, such as seagrass and coral reefs healthy," added the Spanish biologist.
