In late 1964, a 24-year-old Staff Sergeant named Barry Sadler shipped out to Vietnam as a Special Forces medic with the 5th Special Forces Group. He served in the jungles of the Central Highlands until May 1965, when a punji stick wound in his knee ended his combat tour and nearly killed him from infection.

While recovering in the hospital, Sadler wrote a song.

Robin Moore — author of the 1965 bestseller "The Green Berets" — helped him polish the lyrics and secure a recording contract with RCA Records. Sadler recorded it in full dress uniform.

Released on January 11, 1966, "The Ballad of the Green Berets" hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 5, 1966 — where it stayed for five straight weeks. It sold more than two million copies in its first five weeks. It became Billboard's #1 Single of the Year for 1966.

🎖️ THE MAN BEHIND THE SONG

Barry Allen Sadler (1940–1989) was not a professional musician. He was a soldier who learned to play guitar in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam. After his hit, he served briefly as a spokesman for the Army, then left the military in 1967.

His life after fame was troubled. He wrote 29 pulp adventure novels in his "Casca" series. He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in 1979. In 1988, he was shot in the head in a taxi in Guatemala City — the crime was never solved. He died from complications one year later, aged 49.

But his song outlives him. Every Green Beret from 1966 to today knows it by heart.
