This is part of a tutorial created for students studying in the Ocean & Naval Architectural Engineering discipline at Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. The tutorial is primarily aimed at late intermediate and early-advanced Naval Architecture students looking to develop their familiarity with principles of ship design. Today’s tutorial covers the taxonomy of vessels and the decomposition of the realm of vessels into some representative classifications and families of vessels.
The objective of this tutorial is to introduce the classical vessel types and outline the nominal definition and purpose of some of the most common classes of vessels you may work with during your career.
Note: This series is not affiliated with any faculty or department at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
By the end of the tutorial, you should be able to:
Describe the purpose and break down of the common marine vessel types
Identify typical applications
Differentiate between hydrostatic- and hydrodynamic-supported vessels
Examine an image or drawing of a vessel and draw preliminary conclusions about its vessel family
