This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on Jean-Paul Sartre's "Existentialism is a Humanism" and discusses what Sartre means by saying that "existence precedes essence". Human beings do not have a nature like other animals or like technological artifacts. Instead, they first discover themselves existing, and then afterwards determine for themselves what their essence is. In doing so, they decide for all humanity, what it means to be a human being.
