Due to the earthquake, numerous structures across Myanmar, including the Sagaing Bridge and Mandalay Palace walls, suffered extensive damage and destruction.
Centered around the Sagaing Fault in central Myanmar, the earthquake caused significant destruction to various buildings nationwide, including the old Sagaing Bridge and the Mandalay Palace walls.
On March 28, between 12:50 PM and 12:53 PM Myanmar Standard Time, the earthquake occurred with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale. Smaller tremors were also reported by earthquake monitoring websites.
The aftermath of the earthquake saw fires breaking out at more than four locations in Mandalay, including Mandalay University. Many buildings collapsed, leading to casualties, with local reports indicating that hospitals struggled to accommodate the injured.
In Mandalay, key sites such as Maha Myat Muni Pagoda, Ma Soe Yein Monastery, South Thaman Monastery, Pitakat Monastery, Mandalay University, a mosque, Aung Pan Hall in Aung Pan City, and Tada-U Airport were reportedly affected and suffered damage.
In Taungoo Town, Bago Division, pagodas, monasteries, and mosques were also reported to have been damaged, along with fatalities.
Additionally, in the Naypyidaw Council area, the Gem Museum and a landslide near the western part of the military council’s headquarters were reported.
In Karenni State and the Kayah region, some religious buildings, including pagodas, sustained damage during the earthquake.
Originating from the Sagaing Fault, the earthquake registered at 7.7 on the Richter scale. The tremors were felt in neighboring countries, including Laos, India, Bangladesh, China, and Thailand.
