Michael Constantine was an integral part of the Room 222 cast, but at age 94, he ended up joining the rest of his cast members after a long battle with old age. Michael Constantine played the role of Principal Seymour Kaufman at a fictional school called Walt Whitman high school. The show centered around the radically diverse school, located in California, and its students and staff. Most of the show took place in Room 222, where African American teacher Pete Dixon (played by Lloyd Hanes) taught history to a variety of students.

Lloyd Hanes was the lead of the show, but Michael Constantine, Denise Nicholas, and Karen Valentine made up the rest of the most important roles of the show. Such a racially diverse cast featuring approximately equal amounts of black and white actors meant the show was quite bold and progressive for the 70s, but it soon became one of the most beloved shows of its time. When the show first aired on September 17th, 1969, it was scheduled for Wednesdays at 8:30. After two well-received seasons, however, it was moved to the primetime slot of 9:00 on Friday nights.
The show ran for a total of 5 seasons and 113 episodes until its eventual end on January 11th, 1974. It earned three Primetime Emmy Awards, one of which was for Outstanding New Series, and went down in history as one of the most remarkable shows of its time. It was an amazing opportunity for black actors, who have often had difficult time landing roles due to discrimination in the film and television industries. And while certain stereotypes and tropes portrayed in the show could have been executed better, it was one of the more progressive shows of its time.
Overall, the Room 222 cast put a lot of love and hard work into the show, and it really paid off on screen. Of course, the show aired decades ago, and many of the beloved cast members have since passed away. In today’s video, we’re going to take a look at all of the Room 222 cast deaths, as well as where a few of the surviving actors are today. Make sure you stick around because we’re also going to dive into the life (and death) of the legendary Michael Constantine.
