Buskers Meet On New Laws

Описание: ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Dozens of Asheville street performers met at a forum downtown Tuesday night to discuss changes to the current ordinance that regulates their profession.

"There are some ... things about the wording of the ordinance that are unclear," Sparrow Pants of the Asheville Busker's Collective said. "And the police department doesn't know how to enforce it because it's not really clear how it's written."

The ordinance came into focus this fall when city council considered cracking down on busking in the face of noise and nuisance complaints from downtown businesses. Council decided against new regulations, but it made many street performers wary and anxious to see clarity in the local laws.

Currently, the ordinance leaves it unclear just how loud is too loud to play music and exactly where performers can set up and how close together they can be to each other.

The Asheville Downtown Association hosted Tuesday's forum in hopes that area businesses, residents and buskers could agree on new rules and take them to council.
