The festive season is just around the corner, but the rising price of sugar is already adding to the worries of the common man. Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has launched a sharp attack on the Modi government over the surge in sugar prices, blaming its ethanol policy for the rise.
Kejriwal has claimed that diverting sugarcane from sugar production towards ethanol has affected sugar output, triggering a sharp rise in prices. According to him, sugar that was selling at around ₹46 per kilogram just 17 days ago is now being sold at nearly ₹65 per kilogram — a jump of almost ₹20 per kg.
And if this trend continues, the issue is much bigger than simply paying a few extra rupees for a packet of sugar. The real concern is what this price rise could mean for household budgets during the festive season.
Over the past 5 to 10 years, sugar prices have generally not witnessed such a sharp jump in such a short period. Now, with festivals approaching, any sustained rise could hit the common man's pocket hard.
Think about it: festivals mean sweets, desserts, homemade delicacies and increased consumption of sugar. But sugar is not just used in homes. It is also a key ingredient in sweets, bakery products, packaged foods and several other items. So, when sugar becomes expensive, the impact can spread far beyond the grocery bill.
Kejriwal has alleged that the government promoted ethanol blending in petrol with the objective of saving foreign exchange that would otherwise be spent on crude oil imports. But he argues that the policy has created another problem — reduced availability of sugarcane for sugar production.
His question is simple: if more sugarcane is being diverted towards ethanol, where will the sugar required for domestic consumption come from?
This is where the issue becomes particularly important ahead of the festive season. Demand for sugar traditionally rises during festivals as households and businesses prepare sweets and other food items. If prices remain elevated during this period, the impact could be felt across the entire food chain.
Kejriwal also targeted ethanol-blended petrol, alleging that it has affected vehicle mileage and increased concerns among consumers about vehicle performance and maintenance.
He further attacked the Modi government over several previous policy decisions, including demonetisation and the government's response during the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that major policy decisions have often created difficulties for ordinary citizens.
However, whether ethanol policy alone is responsible for the current rise in sugar prices is a matter that requires closer examination, as commodity prices can be influenced by several factors.
But one thing is clear: if sugar prices really move from around ₹46 to ₹65 per kg and remain at those levels, the impact will not be small.
Because during the festive season, expensive sugar does not simply mean expensive tea.
It could mean more expensive sweets, higher food bills and another major hit to already-stretched household budgets.
The big question now is — will this festive season bring sweetness to people's homes, or leave a bitter taste in their pockets?
