Chicago sax player Ari Brown is equally adept on both soprano and tenor saxophones, and as a member of the city's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), he's at home with styles both straight-ahead and avant-garde. Recorded live at the Windy City's longest-standing jazz venue, LIVE AT THE GREEN MILL features Brown's equally long-standing backing band, plus trumpeter Pharez Whitted. Fans of modern "inside/outside" saxophonists, including such wizards as Sam Rivers, David Murray, and Bennie Wallace, should indeed investigate GREEN MILL. In reviews of Ari's first two Delmark albums, Ultimate Frontier (DMK 486) and Venus (DMK 504), writers often used phrases like "overwhelming emotional immediacy" (Down Beat), "rare depth of feeling" (Jazziz) and "raw emotion and ferocity" (JazzTimes). Ar Liner Note Author: Michael Jackson . Recording information: The Green Mill, Chicago, IL (06/22/2007/06/23/2007). Photographer: Michael Jackson . Personnel: Ari Brown (flute, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Ari Brown; Yosef Ben Israel (bass guitar); Dr. Cuz (percussion); Pharez Whitted (trumpet); Kirk Brown (piano); Avreeayl Ra (drums). Audio Mixers: Steve Wagner ; Dave Katzman; Eric Butkus. Down Beat (p.80) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[G]ritty Windy City post-bop at its toughest."
JazzTimes (p.90) - "Brown, on tenor, alternately toughens his tone into a bluesy wail and softens it into a velvet whisper; there's a sensual grace to his performance here that adds to the palpable spirit of redemption, even forgiveness, that resonates throughout."
