DSのボディ構造をベースとして前輪駆動車初の200km/hオーバーを目標とするスポーティーモデルとして1970年に発表されたのがSMである。
SMのSは開発コードでMはマセラティのＭを表す。
最大の特徴はエンジンで、当時提携していたマセラティが開発した2.7リッターV型6気筒DOHCを搭載。エンジンをフロントミッドに置く前輪駆動方式でハイドロニューマティックサスペンション、油圧ブレーキシステム、速度可変式パワーステアリング、全輪ディスクブレーキと言う当時としては画期的なシステムを盛り込んでいた。
1973年には北米向けとして3リッターキャブレター仕様のユニットが加わり、最高出力(190PS/6000rpm)、最大トルク(25.9kgm/4000rpm)を発揮した。 5速MTに加えて3リッターには3速ATの組み合わせも可能となったが1975年に生産が終了している。
