1 Timothy 4:1, "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.”

Interesting points:
1. With this verse, Paul transitions to the issue of false teachers, turning focus on the dangers they present the body of Christ. Here, we see that they will cause some to abandon the faith and pursue all sorts of false and ungodly beliefs.

2. This verse is quite unique in Scripture with Paul’s attribution of the revelation to the “Spirit” although this prophetic statement aligns with Jesus’ warning in Mark 13:22 concerning false Christs and false prophets.

3. Deceiving spirits and demons teach things contrary to or undermining Scripture and should not be limited to witchcraft, spirit worship or even other religions. Today science, philosophy, and even social pressure or culture can lead people from the path of righteousness and God’s truth. Our enemy’s voice sows doubt and discord with simple words like, “But did God really say…” (Genesis 3:1)

Application.
Brothers, our world is full of white noise, spiritual rancor and crafty statements that seek to influence, blind and numb our ability to discern the Truth. Our only sure defense is to know the Word and listen to what the Lord has to say through it. We must learn to hear His voice and recognize when statements and actions do not sit well with our hearts because His Word serves as an ever-present filter for our eyes, ears and soul!

May we be like the Bereans (Acts 17:11) and take captive that which we hear and learn and hold it up to Scripture so that we will remain steadfast in the Faith! May we also teach our children to do likewise as the crescendo of deceiving voices, spiritual lies and crafty “influencers” continue to multiply.
