Join Texas Wendish Heritage Society & Museum docent, Jack Wiederhold, to learn about the Wendish Sorbs that settled Serbin, Texas and its surrounding areas in the mid-nineteenth century.
Also known as Sorbs, The Wends are Baltic Slavs hailing from Lusatia / Lausitz / Sorbia, in modern-day Germany. Their culture has resolutely persevered for over a millennia of warring, crusades, and oppression.
In 1854, a group of 588 brave Wendish settlers set sail for the new world aboard the great ship, Ben Nevis. This video, Part 1 of this series, is an introduction to the history leading up to their voyage.
Our host, Jack, also serves as organist at St. Paul, and plays the introductory, "A Might Fortress is Our God" on the church's original organ.. one of the most well-preserved pump organs still in operation today (a more detailed video on the organ itself will follow).
