Seagulls, sand dunes, and Samuel Barber. Performing this haunting music outside a WWII bunker on Vlieland (Netherlands) was deeply moving, especially after touring the grounds and seeing where soldiers were stationed.
Barber set Matthew Arnold’s 19th-century poem to music in 1931, recording it himself (he was also a baritone) in 1935. With so many conflicts today, singing this piece at a wartime site on this Dutch island was particularly meaningful.
