Pest insects are often a problem in crop production. Pests live alongside beneficial insects that provide valuable services to keep crops and fields healthy. This talk will highlight factors to consider when building an insect management plan that reduces pests but keeps the “unpaid army” of predators, parasitoids and nutrient cyclers active and healthy in and around crop fields.
Dr. Haley Catton is a Research Scientist in Field Crop Entomology with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre. She studies the impact, biology and management of pest and beneficial insects with a focus on cereal crops. Haley’s expertise includes plant-insect interactions, population biology, biological control (using insects to control other insects), and integrated pest management. Her current projects focus on wireworms, cereal leaf beetle, wheat stem sawfly, and beneficial insects.
