The Hidden Story Behind Christmas: Ruth’s Redemption

And this week, we’re looking at another unexpected woman Matthew includes in Jesus’ family tree: Ruth. Not just unexpected… unthinkable. Because Ruth wasn’t Jewish—she was a Moabite. And in ancient Israel, that was a nationality you hid, not highlighted. Yet Matthew puts her front and center in the Messiah’s genealogy. Why? Because her story reveals the kind of King Jesus is–He’s a King who offers redemption!
To understand how a Moabite immigrant ends up in the family of the Messiah, we go back to the Book of Ruth. When Naomi loses her husband and sons, both she and Ruth are widows. Naomi heads home to Israel… and Ruth makes a radical, life-altering decision to go with her.
💛 “Your people will be my people and your God my God.” (Ruth 1:16)
These aren’t Hallmark words. They’re revolutionary. Ruth leaves her homeland, her culture, her gods, and her security to follow the God of Israel. She steps into a nation where signs might as well have read: “No Moabites Allowed.” Ruth becomes an immigrant with no guarantees, trusting God to meet her where she doesn’t yet belong.
And God does. Her faith— not her pedigree, nationality, or past—opens the door. Through Boaz, her kinsman-redeemer, Ruth is welcomed, loved, and redeemed. Their son is Obed. Obed fathers Jesse. Jesse fathers David. And suddenly, the outsider becomes the great-grandmother of Israel’s greatest king.
