Now, standing before the ruin, she could feel him there.

The house had once been theirs. Before the sickness came, before the sky dimmed and the forests turned against themselves. Before the night she left him, swearing she’d return.

She never did.

The rain fell in thin, cold threads, hissing as it met the light spilling from the doorway. It wasn’t a fire — not truly. It was something deeper, older. The kind of flame that remembered.

She stepped closer, boots sinking into the black mud. His voice seemed to rise from the wet earth — soft, distant, not quite human anymore. She wanted to run, but her body betrayed her, drawn toward that impossible glow.

Inside the light, she saw flickers of what had been: his hands at the hearth, his laughter under falling snow, the warmth of their home before the storm. The memories cut through her like glass.

But then, as she reached the threshold, the vision shifted. He was standing there, just beyond the fire — eyes hollow, her skin marked by the same embers that burned through the walls. She looked at him with something that wasn’t love, and wasn’t hate. Only recognition.

“Why did you come back?” he asked.

She couldn’t answer.

He reached out, and the flames reached with him, curling around his arms, his chest, his face. The world fell away. Then, nothing.

When the forest grew still again, the light within the house dimmed — leaving only the scent of rain and smoke.

The door stood open, but no one remained to cross it.
