This is one of the most disturbing and heartbreaking stories to come out of India’s top science institutes in recent times.
In this Manush Ki Bhabche episode, we talk about the tragic death of Anamitra Roy, a 25-year-old PhD scholar in the Department of Biological Sciences at IISER Kolkata. His death has shaken the student community across IISERs, IITs, and universities all over India — many calling it nothing less than an institutional murder.
I went to IISER Kolkata myself, spoke to one of Anamitra’s closest friends — the person who found him unconscious in the lab, called for an ambulance, rushed him to AIIMS Kalyani, stayed the entire night, and is now fighting to make sure Anamitra’s voice and his demand for justice are heard.
In this ground-level coverage, we explore:
Timeline of events from the moment Anamitra was found to the shocking aftermath
Allegations of ragging and harassment by a senior PhD scholar, and how complaints were ignored
The failure of the anti-ragging cell and the alleged inaction of faculty members
How institutional apathy and systemic negligence break students mentally and emotionally
The mental health crisis among PhD and postdoc scholars in India
The culture of silence and fear in academia — where speaking up can end your career
Stigma around neurodivergence and how institutions fail to create safe spaces for students on the autism spectrum
Reactions from current IISER Kolkata students, alumni, and the scientific community
This is not an isolated tragedy. In the last few years, India has lost too many bright students from IISERs, IITs, NITs, AIIMS, and other universities to suicide caused by academic pressure, harassment, and lack of support. Yet the system continues without major reform.
Why this story matters:
Because every time an institution fails to protect its students, we lose not just a life, but years of potential research, innovation, and contribution to society. Anamitra Roy was a brilliant researcher whose work on animal behaviour was internationally recognised. His passing is a loss for science, for academia, and for humanity.
As an IISER Mohali alumnus, I feel personally connected to this case. This episode is my attempt to amplify the voices of students demanding change — to call out harassment, ragging, and mental health neglect in India’s higher education system.
If you are a student, alumni, academic, or simply someone who believes in justice — please watch, share, and speak up.
Justice for Anamitra is justice for every student who has been silenced.
