What makes people actually choose to walk?
Leeds professor Sentao Miao goes beyond the “15‑minute city” idea by showing that walkability isn’t just about proximity, but also how the walking experience is shaped by the mix and placement of facilities along the route. Using millions of real travel records from Beijing, the team built a data-driven model that reveals how different amenities influence walking choices. They also developed an optimization tool that redesigns neighborhoods to boost walk appeal, helping cities create streets that feel vibrant, inviting, and truly people centered.
