Tanzania has inaugurated a state-of-the-art fertilizer blending plant to boost agricultural productivity and reduce imports. The facility was inaugurated by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Burundian President Èveriste Ndayishimiye on June 28, 2025. Burundi is experiencing a fertilizer shortage. The plant will blend organic and mineral-based fertilizers. The $180 million Itracom Fertilizer Limited Facility in Nala Industrial Area, Dodoma will have a production capacity of one million tons annually while creating 1,805 jobs. According to Megaproject, the plant expects to triple production capacity in the coming years. Itracom procured 100,000 tons of manure from local livestock farmers, adding $5.75 million to rural economies. Adriano Ntigacika is the owner and of CEO of Burundi-based Itracom Holding. As mentioned by the Daily News, the Director General of the Tanzania Fertiliser Company (TFC), Samuel Mshote informed that Itracom will evaluate the soil health of different agro-ecological zones to determine their unique needs. He stressed the importance of manufacturing fertilizer tailored to the specific needs of various agro-ecological zones. To help Tanzania shift toward precision agriculture, Itracom will rely on the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) to provide the necessary scientific data. The project also will involve collaboration between Itracom and ESSA, which operates the largest private LPG refinery and ammonia plant in Indonesia. With the introduction of the Itracom Fertilizer plant, Tanzania plans to source at least 80% of its fertilizer from local producers.
